Teaching Resources
All of these resources are suitable for state, integrated and independent
schools. Though they have been written specifically for the New Zealand
situation,with minor alterations, the situations could be equally relevant
to any multi-cultural democratic society.
- "Values and Citizenship education programme-
for years 7-13." Provides basic theory for teachers. Explanation
of use of ethical formula, and outline of programme which repeats in
two year cycles, year 7 and 8, 9 and 10, and 11-13. Also sample lessons.
100 pages.
- "Simple ethical skills for use in social inquiry and
ethical decision-making." For levels 1-8. Provides basic
theory for teachers, use of ethical formula from simple principles at
junior level, expanding as students mature in ethical reasoning, and
including the handling of several possibly controversial issues, i.e.
the economic world, Treaty issues, environmental ethics and spirituality
and religion. 60 pages.
- "Forty lessons on Citizenship." For years 7-13.
Prepared with reference to the values specified in the 2007 N.Z. Curriculum,
and offering a simple means by which the required outcomes may be achieved.
Background information is provided for lessons on a series of 36 repeating
concepts which cover four of the key competencies, managing self - relating
to others - participating and contributing - thinking. (170 pages)
- "Plays for discussion." These 50 plays
are designed as a basis for discussion in a weekly half hour slot of
social studies time. They relate to the values and key competencies
specified in the 2007 N.Z. Curriculum. They have been used with considerable
success in the classroom, and enable students to critically analyse
values, and actions based on them, as required in the curriculum, without
involving students in any personal issues.
- "Key Competencies, Values and Citizenship for Primary Schools." A programme for ethical reasoning for juniors in the "key competencies" of managing self, relating to others and participating and contributing.
